What is GitHub Satellite?

GitHub Satellite is an international, regionally-focused community celebration for the GitHub developer community showcasing local developers, projects, and companies. Attendees will walk away with a deeper understanding of GitHub products and features, will be exposed to new technology, and will leave feeling inspired about the future of software.

Why is Satellite virtual this year?

From the very beginning, GitHub has been built on the power of asynchronous and remote collaboration, and we’re applying everything we’ve learned to make Satellite an exciting and engaging virtual experience while keeping our community safe during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Who should attend Satellite India?

Github Satellite is an event for the developer community. The curated content, the broadcast production, and the engagement elements are all built with a developer first mindset.

The event will feature 2 broadcast streams - Open Source & DevOps, featuring software developers, maintainers, business leaders, and GitHub experts covering a variety of topics that are both technical and topical.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional developer, or looking to explore the world of software development, there’s something for everyone.

How can I participate in Satellite India?

Tune in starting on March 26 right here at githubsatellite.com and:

  • Watch GitHub COO Erica Brescia’s opening keynote
  • Tune into live Q&As with all speakers following their presentations
  • Join the conversation and ask questions on GitHub Discussions
  • Download additional resources provided by speakers
  • Enjoy live creative coding performances at the start of each day
  • Design your own Octocat using the Octocat Generator
  • Snag some limited edition Satellite India swag
  • Check out a special day of content for students on March 25
  • Extend your experience with hands-on workshops each day

Will the broadcast be live?

Satellite India will be primarily live, hosted by live regional hosts and local performers. Some content might be pre-recorded in order to accommodate speaker or technical needs.

Do I need to register in advance?

Registration is not required to watch the livestream or on-demand sessions. We recommend adding a calendar invite for the keynote to make sure you don’t miss out on the live experience. The hands-on workshops taking place each afternoon cost ㍓500 for each session, require advance registration, and space is limited.

What is the cost to attend Satellite 2021?

All keynote and breakout sessions are free this year. Workshops require advance registration and cost $7 (₹500) for each session. All workshop proceeds will be donated to a local non-profit. Our student programming is free to attend.

How do I log on?

To watch any of the live streaming content, simply go githubsatellite.com at the date and time of the broadcast and select the channel you wish to watch. Comments and questions will take place on GitHub Discussions, which requires a (free) GitHub account. If you register for workshops, we will provide details about logging in and participating, as these will take place in a separate virtual platform.

How will the sessions work?

Sessions will begin at their scheduled start times in the DevOps and Open Source channels. While watching sessions, you’ll be able to join the conversation and ask questions live via GitHub Discussions.

What is GitHub Discussions?

GitHub Discussions is a product feature we rolled out at GitHub Satellite 2021. It’s a tool developers are encouraged to use to improve their workflows—and we will be using it for community conversations throughout the event.

Discussions live in your project repository, so they’re accessible where your community is already working together. Their threaded format makes it easy to start, respond to, and organize unstructured conversations. Questions can be marked as answered, so over time a community’s knowledge base grows naturally. And because discussions aren’t closed the way issues are, they can easily serve as a place for maintaining FAQs and other collaborative documentation. We recognize that community discussion is as much a part of development as coding, so discussion contributions appear in users’ contribution graphs.

What if I miss a session or can’t attend a session

Every session will be recorded and made available for on demand viewing within a day of the original broadcast! Catch up by clicking on past session titles in the schedule once they’re uploaded.

Do you have Satellite content specific for students?

Yes! We have a full day dedicated to our student developers. Attendance is free and open to everyone.

How can I sponsor GitHub Satellite?

At this time we do not have sponsorships available for GitHub Satellite India 2021. If you are interested in participating in future events, please contact us at events@github.com and we would be happy to chat about opportunities for GitHub Universe 2021, our flagship fall event.

What are Satellite Workshops?

Workshops are a virtual learning experience offered in the afternoon on both event days to help developers get hands on with GitHub platform tools, GitHub Enterprise, and more.

All workshop proceeds will be donated to Muskaan.

What time are the Workshops?

March 26: 3:00pm - 4:30pm (IST)
